Overview of a three tier intervention model:
Tier 1
All students
Some students (~15%)
Few students (~5%)
Aimed at approximately 5% of students who continue to struggle despite Tier 1 and Tier 2 supportFurther diagnostic assessment to determine additional skill needs for both academic and behavioral difficulties
Students receive even more time and even more intense instruction and support from highly trained staffStudents are progress monitored weekly

Smart goals are part of the intervention process at Tier 2. Students are identified as struggling and interventions are put in place. The intervention begins with determining one or two areas of need for the student and creating a Smart Goal.
The Smart Goal involves determining what a student will work on improving, assessing for a baseline of current knowledge, and providing the opportunity to build the skills needed. During the time the student is receiving the intervention they should be progress monitored weekly and at the end of the pre-determined time, a post assessment should be given.
Sources to help determine a student performance level:
1) Teachers and Intervention Specialists can use NWEA and DesCartes within NWEA. The DesCartes chart will allow the teacher to locate the current performance level (based on NWEA RIT scores) and the next step or level in RIT performance. The DesCartes strands are available for language arts, mathematics and language usage. They are not by grade level, they are sequentially leveled by the subject and student RIT score. Click here for examples on how to use DesCartes and creating Smart Goals.

2) Teachers and Intervention Specialists can review the attached stages of math development which cover math development from Kinder thru Second grade. Determine the baseline of what the student knows and provide intervention for the next stage of math development.
3) Teachers and Intervention Specialists may choose to create a Learning Path in Compass Learning. Choose any grade level standard that matches the Descartes target goal and create a pre-test, learning path, and post-test folder for the student to work on in class, at home or in the computer lab.
**Intervention Tip - join the MBC Compass Learning group (Group Join Code: clzqm1x4). There are many tutorials on using Compass Learning for intervention, creating the learning paths, creating pre-test and post-tests.**
Tier 2 interventions involve determining a baseline, creating a smart goal, providing intervention, progress monitoring weekly, adjusting the materials you are using or the amount of service time the student receives and providing a post-test to determine if your intervention is working or if the student requires additional support.
Tier 3 interventions involve a referral for a special education evaluation.

Tier 1
All students
- Begins with quality core instruction and positive school culture
- Available for all students as needs arise
- Differentiated academic instruction and support within the regular classroom through daily small group instruction
- Behavioral expectations are taught school-wide throughout the year
Some students (~15%)
- Aimed at approximately 15% of students who continue to struggle despite Tier 1 support
- Diagnostic Assessment to determine specific academic skill needs
- Students receive more time and more intensity
- Students are progress monitored every other week
- Academic intervention classes are fluid and change every 6-8 weeks based on student progress
- Behavioral challenges are met by teaching specific skills
Few students (~5%)
Aimed at approximately 5% of students who continue to struggle despite Tier 1 and Tier 2 supportFurther diagnostic assessment to determine additional skill needs for both academic and behavioral difficulties
